How to apply
  • Fill out the form
    Fill out the form on the main page and click "send". You will be redirected to the payment page. Application fee is 20 €: it is a non-refundable fee used for application processing.

  • Download the movie
    After applying, you will get an email with a link to a full movie without music + 5 short pre-selected sequences from this movie for download along with a link to a questionnaire.

  • Write music
    Choose one sequence you like the most, download it and write up to 3 minutes of music for the given episode;

  • Send us your track
    Send us your composition (a YouTube link to your track glued together with the chosen video sequence with a hashtag #NGCLab2021 + additionally, a piece you composed in .mp3 format + your score in .PDF) by March 20th, 2021;

  • Shortlist
    During the month of March of 2021 our team led by Harry Gregson-Willams will choose the students and on April 1st, 2021 we will announce the names of all the participants (16 persons).

  • Waiting list
    If any student decides to cancel his/her participation, we will have a waiting list. If you don't get into the final shortlist, you will still have a chance to join us.
Result of NGC Lab
Each participant of the NGC Lab will be able to:

  • create an original 3-minute score for a sequence of a feature film;
  • record it with the orchestra: a full symphony orchestra of 54 musicians;
  • receive a recording of their composition mixed at Mosfilm;
  • expand their network by establishing meaningful contacts with colleagues and industry professionals.
EQUIPMENT AND SOFTWARE
If you are going to attend the full program, it will require:

  • Personal laptop;
  • Headphones;
  • Midi keyboard (not obligatory);
  • DAW software, such as Logic or Cubase (or any other DAW);
  • Scoring software, such as Sibelius or Finale, to share, review and correct your score during the Laboratory

*Sufficient time must be provided in your score for percussionists to switch instruments during the recording of your composition.
Application deadline
The composition must be submitted until March 20th, 2021 the latest. Any work submitted after this date won't be considered.
Participant's profile
  • relevant educational background and / or work experience;
  • experience in composing music for films or moving image;
  • motivation and professional interest in growing as a film composer;
  • show potential for international collaboration;
  • speak fluent English.
Can I use electronics?
Yes. If you use electronics in your composition, please prepare your electronic tracks in .wave 24/48 format which should start from the beginning of your session, and if your live orchestra starts from the first bar, you should think about two bars of pre click in the same tempo and in the same beat.

You also have to provide tempo track with two bars of pre click in midi format for our sound engineer.
Tuition fee
NGC Lab's complete tuition fee is 1900 €, which includes: Individual mentoring sessions, Lectures, Workshops, Recording, Mixing + Bonus.

The fee doesn't include travel arrangements to Moscow, visa expenses, room or board.
Two grants for Russian citizens
NGC Lab, Russian Music Union and Russian Composers Union established two grants for the Russian citizens, who applied for the NGC Lab project have a chance to get sponsorship* for the Laboratory program.

1. NGC Lab and our co-organizer, Russian Musical Union, provide one grant for one applicant from Russia.

2. Another grant is issued by our other partner, Union of composers of Russia, and will be given to one Union's member.

No special requirements needed. You may apply to the program on a general terms. NGC Lab participants (16 people) will be selected personally by Harry Gregson-Williams from the pool of applications. If there are Russian citizens among the participants, the grant recipient will be determined by a committee consisting of Harry Gregson-Williams, the NGC Lab team, and the organizers from the Russian Music Union.

The grant recipient from the Union of composers of Russia will be determined by a committee of the Union.

*Sponsorship covers NGC Lab tuition fee 1900€. Application fee 20€ should be payed by the applicant. Accommodation, travel and other costs are not included.

How do I pay for my course?
If you are accepted into the NGC Lab program, the fee must be paid between April 1, 2021 and April 10, 2021. In case of non-payment and/or no-show, your spot in the program will be given to someone else. In the email of acceptance confirmation you will be given a link for the payment. You can pay your course via Yandex system (for Russian citizens) or PayPal (for the rest of the world).
WHEN CAN I APPLY FOR NGC LAB?
Registration for the NGC Lab Program 2021 is closed on March 20th, 2021.

Can I conduct the orchestra during the recording?
Due to the time limitation we would prefer to let our assigned conductor lead through the whole recording session. You can advise or consult with our recording conductor before the session.
Should I have my scores and orchestra parts printed?
Not necessary, we will provide printing service here on the place. We will print the final version after all the changes have been made during the mentoring sessions.
HOW WILL I GET MY RECORDING?
Your 54 orchestral recordings will be sent via wetransfer as Pro Tools Sessions to each composer within 5 working days after the recording.
TUITION FEE REFUND POLICY
Should the User be admitted to the Laboratory and pay the participation fee, but for some internal reasons should he/she be not able to take part in it, the Organizer shall refund the fee on the following conditions:

If the User notifies the Organizer before 01.05.2021 - the full amount (the participation fee in full) shall be refunded;

If the User notifies the Organizer before 01.06.2021 - 50% of the fee shall be refunded;

If the User notifies the Organizer before 01.07.2021 - 25% of the fee shall be refunded;

If the User notifies the Organizer after 01.07.2021 (starting from 02.07.2021) the fee shall not be refundable.

2. Should the User pay the participation fee in full, but should he/she be not able to participate in the Laboratory due to force-majeure circumstances (such as, for example, illness confirmed by a certificate; consular authorities refusal to issue a visa and similar cases) the participation fee will be returned to the User in full within a period specified in a notification the Organizer shall additionally send the User. The essential condition for the refund under this subparagraph shall be documentary confirmation of the circumstances that have arisen by the User (sending a copy of the document to the Organizer).

3. 4. The overall term for the funds returning shall be 30 calendar days from the moment the Organizer receives the relevant letter from the User. If any bank charges arise in the course of the refund procedure, they shall be automatically deducted from the amount refunded to the User.

5. Should the refund be made to the Users being the citizens of the Russian Federation who have paid the participation fee in rubles at the Central Bank rate as of the date of payment, the funds shall also be returned in rubles at the original rate (the Central Bank rate as of the date of payment). If any bank charges arise in the course of the refund procedure, they shall be automatically deducted from the amount refunded to the User.
Coronavirus Refunds
Should the Organizer be forced to change the dates of holding the Laboratory in the event of a new wave of the global pandemic of COVID-19 the Organizer shall notify the User of the new terms. Should the User be unable to participate in the Laboratory on the new date the Organizer shall refund him/her the participation fee in full. Should the User agree to participate in the Laboratory on the new date, no additional formalities shall be required.
Waiting list
If any student decides to cancel his/her participation you will still have a chance to join us. In case we have a free spot in the main program the participant will be chosen by NGC Lab experts team via revising the works once again. As soon as the name will be announced, the student will be informed personally. Then he will be asked to pay the program and proceed with travel preparation.
Dates
Applications can be submitted between December 15th, 2020 and May 16th, 2021 (inclusively).

First round: May 16th, 2021 through June 1st, 2021. The list of the 15 finalists will be announced June 1st, 2021

Second round: June 1st, 2021 through July 1st, 2021. The winner will be announced July 1st, 2021

Our jury consists of the following people:

Application Process
1. Applications can be submitted between December 15th, 2020 and May 16th, 2021 (inclusively).

2. During this period a participant has to compose an up to 5-minute long piece that could become the main theme for a movie.

3. Afterwards, the participant will be asked to fill out a special form on the website www.ngclab.com and attach his/her composition (both: music in .MP3 format, and scores in .PDF) that he/she wants to present at the competition, and it must meet the following requirements:
– The work shouldn't be previously played on stage or released publicly;
– The maximum length of the piece should not exceed 5 minutes;
– Our orchestra comprises 76 musicians. You are free to choose the musicians you need. You will find a full list in the Orchestra roster paragraf;
– No electronics can be used for music;
– The work shouldn't be previously played on stage or released publicly;
– The maximum length of the piece should not exceed 5 minutes;

– Please title your file as per following: LastName_FirstName_NGC-Comp2021. Files with wrong titling won't be considering;
– No group work is accepted, only individual compositions.

4. Upon submission, a participant will be asked to pay an application fee in the amount of 35 € for the applicants before March 1st, 2021. After March 1st, 2021 the fee is 50 €.

5. NGC Competition jury will present the shortlist of the finalists June 1st, 2021. The list will be available to the public, and the finalists will receive a notification via email.

6. The jury will announce the winner July 1st, 2021. - Full scores and musical parts of a winning piece should be sent in PDF by July 10th, 2021

Special nomination "New classics Melody Award"
Our partner "New classics competition" has established its own prize "New classics Melody Award" for a rich, memorable tune.

The recipient of the special prize of 50,000 rubles will be chosen by the "New Classics" committee from the list of NGC Competition finalists and will be announced on July 1, 2021.

Application fee
Every applicant has to pay a registration fee in the amount of 35 € (until March 1st , 2021) or 50 € (between March 2nd, 2021 and May 16th, 2021). The fee is non-refundable, including cases when applicants withdraw their participation. The fee is to be paid upon submission of the composition via Yandex system (for Russian citizens) or PayPal (for the rest of the world).
NGC Competition procedure and time schedule
All the applications submitted by the deadline – May 16th, 2021 – will be considered in the first round by our jury of experts and by June 1st, 2021 they will announce the list of 15 finalists.

During the second round, our jury will review again works of 15 chosen finalists and will announce the winner July 1st, 2021.

The decision of the Jury will be final and cannot be disputed.

NGC Competition is under no obligation to make any use of any submitted Composition.

NGC Competition reserves the right to cancel and/or extend the Competition or, to the extent as may be necessary, amend these rules without notice. No liability shall attach to NGC Competition as a result of any such cancellation or extension.
